I recently celebrated my boyfriend’s birthday. As part of his gift I created a 3 course dinner. I admit I was a bit nervous since he is not only a wine expert but a foodie with an impeccable palate – the pressure was on. With taste and healthy being my two priorities I wanted to make him the most delicious meal and keep it healthy. Dinner was a huge hit and so was this cake adapted from Mario Batali’s restaurant Babbo. The rosemary gives this light cake a mature depth. I recently experimented with Bob’s Red Mill Gluten Free All Purpose flour replacing the regular white flour and it tasted the same. Wheat or not, this cake is a sure winner.

Serves 8
Ingredients:

1 1/2 organic unbleached flour (or gluten free all purpose flour)

1 T. Baking Powder

1/2 t. sea salt

4 eggs

3/4 cup organic raw cane sugar or sucanat

2/3 olive oil

2 T. rosemary finely minced

1 T coconut oil

2 organic peaches sliced

Directions:

Preheat oven to 325 degrees. Oil an 8 1/2 or 9 inch loaf pan. In a small bowl mix the flour, baking powder and salt until combined and set aside. With an electric mix beat the eggs in a bowl on high for 30 seconds. Add the sugar and keep beating until foamy. While the mixer is still going add in the oil. Then fold in the rosemary. Add the flour to the egg mixture and mix just until combined. Bake for 45-50 minutes, turning the pan half way through cooking time. Bake until toothpick comes out clean. Let it cool for 10 minutes. Remove from pan.

When ready to slice and serve, heat coconut oil in a pan on medium high heat. Add the peaches and saute until cooked through. Serve the cake with warm peaches.

Last night I headed over to Lululemon for an in-store job fair on the upper east side. I once applied for a job at Lulu when I lived in Portland, Oregon so I had an idea of what to expect – a lot of friendly outgoing women all aspiring to work for a company whose philosophy centers around living your best life. What I didn’t expect was to be given a workout class I had never heard of before and end up loving it!

For the last 8 years I have been working in the yoga/fitness field, taking classes and trainings in dance, Pilates, Gyrotonic, yoga, Body-Mind Centering, Franklin Method, Zumba, Bangra, and more. But I had never heard of IntenSati, a cardio workout that combines the physicality of aerobics, dance and yoga while finding the connection within yourself through verbal affirmation. Students are lead through a sequence of movements from yoga and aerobics but what makes IntenSati different is the students echo phrases that are empowering and self-actualizing.

An avid yogi, I was not sure what to think at first but as I screamed out “I am strong” while holding a deep squat I felt powerful, peaceful, determined and felt like the warrior the teacher described us to be. And then this smile appeared on my face that I just couldn’t erase for the rest of the class. It was one of the most engaging, rhythmic, uplifting workouts I’ve ever experienced. I also woke up pleasantly sore this morning.

Where so many classes are about focusing on a position or step, Intensati offers something truely unique which is verbal expression. When we hear our own voice speak affirmations we believe in ourselves more and when we believe in ourselves we can do anything we set out to.

Namaste

On a sunny Saturday this weekend sat a class of women ready and eager to participate in BodyTalk Access, the foundation of The BodyTalk System that teaches you 6 techniques you can do on yourself and those around you to help restore better communication in the Body-Mind. The students, some new and some experienced Access Technicians, (this is the titled used once you take the course) were immediately drawn in by the sophisticated and relevant presentation given by Advanced BodyTalk Practitioner/Teacher Jalma Marcus, who’s background as a nurse gave us a very holistic look at how our bodies can adapt to a healthier state of being. We all have the power to heal ourselves on some level; it takes work though in order to awaken to our potential. As Jalma likes to say “sometimes our bodies decide to check out and go to Florida for awhile”.

Well Florida can be nice but when our bodies are calling out for us to pay attention to physical, emotional, and mental signals this is a good time to come back and at our habits like overloading on sugar and caffeine, accepting too few hours of sleep in order to make the deadlines, suppressing uncomfortable emotions. We not only hurt ourselves when we ignore the negative effects of our habits but we affect those around us as well. Have you ever changed a habit and then realized that something that used to bother you in your environment or with another person shifted along with your own shift. Well you can picture that happening inside your body as well. Your cells experience those same reactions when we stop and slow down and address the stress that is causing us to feel tired, irritated, bloated, intolerant, allergic, in pain, etc. When you start to notice and change one thing be it your diet, exercise, social life, it’s like your cells begin to say” hey, she’s finally smelling the roses and paying attention to her body”. Our bodies are incredibly wise and when we begin to mindfully attune to how we are feeling we can better understand our interior landscape.

BodyTalk is a comprehensive system that addresses all the possible ways in which the bodymind complex can re-regulate to a state of balance. In the Access class you learn how to improve brain function, stress threshold, hydration, immunity, musculoskeletal balance as well as a first-aid protocol.

By the end of the day the students were applying the tapping techniques like seasoned practitioners and experiencing incredible changes in themselves and one another. We all have this intuitive ability to move our energy, to expand our consciousness, to create possibility in ourselves and our environment.

If you are interested in taking a BodyTalk Access course or having a private session you can contact me at 413.717.0459 or at martiwolfson@yahoo.com.
