Movement
Movement is more than stamina, stretching and strengthening. The way in which we move through our environment is as much an internal experience as it is external. How we move is a combination of our developmental growth, physical activities, habitual patterning, trauma, and emotional experiences, to name a few. Connecting more to your body through breath, alignment, imagery, sound and flowing sequences helps to open up the physical and emotional body, releasing tightness to create more ease and comfort. Joseph Pilates says “we are as old as our spines”. Doing what we can to make sure our spines remain supple, yet strong and supportive has a great effect on the entire body including our muscles, ligaments, organs, and nerves. Just look at a baby, who’s spine moves like a slinky with the head and limbs moving freely. We can maintain this youthful feeling by working through developed patterns and finding potential for new movement in the body.
What is Gyrotonic?
Gyrotonic is a unique movement system that stretches and strengthens the the muscles while stimulating and strengthening connective tissue around the joints. Exercises are coordinated with special breathing patterns that benefit the aerobic and cardiovascular systems and promote neuromuscular health.
Gyrotonic exercises are be done on specialized equipement that help create more freedom in the joints and muscles; at the same time the exercises can be done seated and on the floor. The methodology, created by Juliu Horvath is derived from his background in dance, yoga, and tai chi.
Marti’s movement classes are unique to the individual, combining an integrative approach from yoga, Pilates, Gyrotonic, Body Mind Centering and dance.
